Miscellaneous 19th-Century Women's Fashion plates from Peterson's Magazine, The Ladies' Pocket Magazine and other sources

American Fashions • circa 1820s-1860s

Original 160-plus-year-old hand-colored engravings

These prints are being sold "as is" due to age-related condition issues. Please view the enlargements carefully by clicking on the thumbnail images below. The Darvill's watermark obviously does not appear on the actual antique prints.

Fashion plates were hand-colored engravings and color lithographs that appeared in women’s magazines. Since clothing could not be obtained ready-made, these plates provided information to dressmakers and home sewers on the latest fashion trends. In the United States many of the engravings and lithographs were copied from plates in French magazines. The two most popular American women’s magazines during the Civil War were Godey’s Lady’s Book and Peterson’s Magazine.
